It’s 2184 in Pavonis, the Martian metropolis thriving on a partially terraformed red planet. The people of Mars opted to redefine evolution, reshaping their once-human bodies into an assortment of tailor-made forms to tackle the demands of their unforgiving new world. New Mars, supported by its funded transhumanist values, could be a quasi-utopia—barring the unregulated corporate greed and law-enforcement power-tripping, both taking advantage of the planet’s naively unsuspecting populace. Meet Dax, a burr-switching civil investigator with the tendency to make snap decisions, and his cynical new partner, Anaya.

The novel introduces a host of characters, some inserted abruptly only to then disappear into the background, suggesting unrealized potential left unrealized. Character progression is sparse, with a handful getting moments of closure that feel like their only depth. The tale itself is fairly basic, lacking complexity and staying predictable until a neat twist hits—though it’s so late you’re left with just 10 minutes of playtime before the credits roll. The post-ending follows, feeling not quite empty but undeniably underwhelming.
