I don’t typically play tower defense games, but the sophisticated tile-altering mechanics got me hooked (and those adorable gnomes didn’t hurt either!). Gnomes is a rogue-lite infused tower defense game, reimaging time-honored mechanics in an engaging manner. Where you set up your defenses is more critical here than in most TDs I’ve experimented with, thanks to a masterful path-diversion system. Funnel enemies into your towers, guiding multiple paths into one killable, easily controlled zone to coast through rounds. It’s one of those pleasingly simple, deeply complex games that leaves you asking why it’s not been done sooner. I’ve never been a big fan of TDs, but this improves the genre to the point where every match is a new, puzzle-like puzzle to solve.
