In a recent interview with Collider’s Steven Weintraub, James Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO James Safran tackled the burning question: Is Robert Pattinson coming back as Batman for The Brave and the Bold in the DCU? Their response was a clear letdown for many.
“That’s not on the table,” Gunn said without hesitation.
Safran added some context: “We’re big fans of Robert, no question, but we’ve got to bring a new Batman into the DCU. It’s a critical step, and that’s what we’re building toward with The Brave and the Bold.”
Fan Reactions Light Up the Internet
DC Film News shared the scoop on Twitter, and the comments section quickly turned into a battleground of opinions—mostly leaning toward disappointment.
“I’m not sold on having two Batmans at once,” wrote @GothamWatcher. “I was really hoping they’d sneak Pattinson into the DCU for a smaller role, not start fresh with someone else for a standalone Brave and the Bold film.”
User @ComicCrusader99 weighed in too: “Gunn’s got a big challenge now. He’s got to pick the perfect Batman for his DCU and make sure the story and performance land. The DCU’s starting strong, but he’s got to keep the ball rolling.”
The DCU officially begins with Superman, setting the tone for what’s ahead.
Not a Surprise, But Still a Sting
Here’s the thing—this isn’t exactly a plot twist. Gunn made it clear a while back that Pattinson’s Batman wouldn’t join the main DCU crew. Instead, The Batman and its sequel, The Batman Part II, are locked into the “DC Elseworlds” lane, separate from the core narrative.
Still, it seems fans were quietly rooting for Gunn to rethink that call. Based on this update, though, he’s not budging an inch.
