Never Second in Rome drops you straight into the blood-soaked battlefields of ancient Rome as a centurion serving under the infamous Julius Caesar himself. The game is set in a Republic that’s dominating the Mediterranean but barely holding itself together after years of brutal civil war. When a new governor shows up in your province, you’re suddenly caught in a political shitstorm that’ll eventually determine the fate of Rome and its growing empire. Starting just before the kickoff of the Gallic War, you’ll take charge of a century in a freshly formed legion and try to carve your name into history.
The Harsh Truth About Recent Changes
Let me be real with you – the developers’ decision to ditch meta-progression has fucking tanked this game’s replay value. The gameplay loop has become painfully one-dimensional with basically a single “right way” to handle everything. This kills any reason to start a new campaign once you’ve figured out the optimal strategy.
What’s even more frustrating is that instead of improving the Choose Your Own Adventure elements to compensate, they’ve actually made them worse. Most of your choices still boil down to either “Take an optional harder fight” or “Roll the dice on a skill check for some tiny reward.” The final nail in the coffin? Events and battles no longer adapt based on how well you’re performing, which completely destroys any incentive to experiment with different playstyles or strategies across multiple playthroughs.
